Hey Dot Comes Out of Hiding!

Hey Dot by Zen Chic has been in my “collection of fabric” since the fall of 2016.  I loved the bright colors and simple prints.  So here sat my layer cake, until now.

Hey Dot Jelly Roll by Zen Chic Moda 752106284654 - Quilt in a Day / Quilting Fabric

I wanted an easy pattern and one that would be good for the larger prints in the fabric.  Here is my choice.

This is from the Fat Quarter Shop shortcut quilts, using a Jolly Bar.  It is called Jolly Bar Meringue.  Here is the link for the free pattern.

I had to order the ruler, hello Amazon.  Of course, since I was waiting for that ruler to start cutting this quilt, I ripped open that package.  It was missing a very important corner for a ruler, so had to go back.  But another came in two short days.  Cutting then began.

The pattern calls for 1 Jolly Bar, but I wanted to increase the size of this quilt, so the Layer Cake that I had was going to be perfect.  I decided on 8 x 8 blocks.  I pulled out the low volume prints to use some other time and got to cutting.

The blocks went together quickly.

In no time I had all the blocks together and quilting happening.  I decided to do my usual straight line quilting, but did it 1 inch apart.  I think it was the right choice for these fabrics and pattern.

I used Kona Chartreuse for the backing.  Ordered it for pick up at Joann’s.  Two yards, I know what was I thinking I needed four yards.  So placed another order for two more yards.  When I was about one quarter of the way done with the quilting I thought to myself, why didn’t I go on Etsy and see if they had any of the Hey Dot yardage.  That would  have been a great idea for the back.  Maybe next time I’ll think ahead.  I love when I have a good idea, just wish they came sooner at times.

Here she is with her label and striped binding.

This is so bright and pretty! The Kona Chartreuse is a wonderful choice for the backing. I sewed one of these quilts when they released the pattern with Halloween prints and I played with the layout and added a spider web to the quilting. It was a fun and easy sew. After seeing yours I want to make another, larger quilt in the original layout. Thank you for sharing and inspiring in my linky party today. Happy quilting … 🙂 Pat

I love the movement that the quilt top has, and the striped binding is such a wonderful compliment to the front and frame for the backing. Hooray for using up a layer cake long in the stash!

I missed this post (I’m not sure how that happened?) – anyway, I love this quilt. It came out really well! Such a happy, sunny quilt. Of course, I’m in love with the backing!! Nice finish, Jan!
