Runner from Scraps

August of last year I finished the JellyRoll Snowflake QAL with Fat Quarter Shop.  All of the leftover corners I made into HSTs.  I had 194 1.5″ HSTs to use for something.

I had pinned this from Melanie Hamm and used it to decide what to do with these HSTs.  Here were a few choices.

With all these little pieces we all know that I need all the help possible to make these blocks precise.  Over the summer when I headed to Michigan our high school girl get together ( need to come up with a better name for our annual thing), a few of us are quilters and we talk quilts.  Our hostess quilts and her husband does woodworking.  We talked about tailor clappers.  I have one I use for seams on many of my blocks.  We talked about a GIANT clapper.

A few months passed and I got a large, heavy package.  Opened it and here was a beautiful clapper, 13 x 13 inches.  Not only is it beautiful, but it is heavy.  Eight pounds, so when I am putting things together I can really say I am exercising.  Mark is very talented and is selling his things in his etsy store.   I have several of his tools and especially love the magnetic picker upper tool.  He bowls are beautiful as well, I have two here at my house.  At this point no Monster Clappers, but they are coming.

Here is my first block all pressed.  Using this clapper and my wool mat makes things very flat.  Pressing this block  of 64 little pieces was easy, it fit perfectly under my new clapper.

Here are the three blocks I was able to make with my extra scrap pieces.  Enough for a small little runner.  Only 4 tiny HSTs left, not sure I’ll save them.

Each block is a different but uses my favorite piece the Half Square Triangle.  There are so many things you can do with them.

You are all correct, I used straight line quilting for this runner.  I ventured into doing each block in a straight line going around the block to the center.  It looks a little rough, but is a good first try.

Next time I’ll do a little more planning for the quilting instead of just jumping.  It will help with the crazy lines I have on this runner.

Wow, I typically don’t keep those bonus HSTs but this is so pretty! You did a great job.

That is gorgeous, Jan! It really is fun to see what different designs can come from HSTs. The giant clapper looks really helpful!

The runner is fantastic, and I love that you chose a different layout for each block. HSTs are such a versatile block (I love them, too)! And wow, that giant clapper is a thing of beauty. Let us know when he has them ready to sell!

I love this Jan! I was thinking about scraps and quilters who have them and quilters who don’t. In fact, I was thinking you didn’t have them as you often use precuts…..proved me wrong. The clapper is a thing of beauty for sure….not to go to the etsy shop to see what is there.
